History of BSPSFA
From Grass roots to greatness
In 1970, a pivotal meeting at Johannesburg Railway Station addressed issues with the U12 tournament, leading to the West Rand hosting in 1970 and a proposal to the Football Association of South Africa (F.A.S.A.) for a national U13 primary school tournament. Early tournaments (1971-1975) faced financial challenges. By 1976, U13 high school boys' participation was debated, and the tournament proceeded with 15 teams. Sponsorship increased over the years, but so did costs, requiring broader association support. Manager discontent arose in 1981 regarding representation within F.A.S.A. The tournament expanded to 18 teams in 1982, necessitating a format change. The 1994 tournament was the last with 18 teams and saw future Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund involved. Recent years have seen fluctuating participation, with a current vision to expand and re-engage past teams, evidenced by the return of Kwa-Zulu Natal South and East London, with a peak of 30 teams in 2025 despite funding issues for some regions.
